How To Protect Your Trees & Shrubs From Insects & Disease

Fleas & Ticks

Perimeter spraying of low-lying shrubs to minimize populations of fleas and ticks.


Usually done once per month, 3 - 4 times a year (Recommended)


Foliar - A spray application used to control leave chewing caterpillars beetles, skeletonizers, etc. generally found on large shade trees.

One application usually late spring and a second application mid summer (Recommended)


Sawfly - A spray application used to control the Saw Fly larvae which affect all types of Pine trees and shrubs.More than one application may be necessary for proper control

2 applications in mid to late spring

Adelgid - A spray application used to control Adelgids which are a variety of insects that pierce plant tissues and suck out fluids causing stress and weakening of the plant. Adelgids generally affect Hemlock, White Pine and Spruce trees. Multiple applications are recommended in order to control all life stages of the Adelgid. Insects usually appear as white cottony masses. Cottony masses will often remain on the plant after the insect has been killed.

Usually 2 - 3 sprays per year (Recommended)

Cedar Apple Rust - A spray application used to control the fungal disease Cedar Apple Rust which affects Apple Crabapple and Hawthorne trees. Causes discolored spots on leaves, yellowing of leaves, and early leaf drop.

2 - 3 sprays in early spring timed 1wk to 2wks apart (Recommended)

Crabapple Scab - A spray application used to control the fungal disease apple scab which affects Apple and Crabapple trees. Causes discolored spots on leaves, yellowing of leaves, deformed fruits, and early leaf drop

Mite - A spray application used to control mites which are insects that pierce tissue and suck out fluids causing stress and weakening of trees and shrubs. Mites generally affect a variety of trees and shrubs including: Andromeda, Arborvitae, Azalea, Boxwood, Cherry, Crabapple, Elm, Fir, Hawthorn, Hemlock, Holly, Juniper, Ash, Pine, Privet, Roses, Spruce & Virburnum. Most Common on evergreens, causing browning or graying. Can cause sever damage in short time periods during hot dry weather.

2 - 3 sprays 2 wks - 1mo. apart. Summer-fall (Recommended)

Birch, Boxwood and Holly Leafminer - A spray application or ground injection used to control Leafminer which is an insect larvae that mines our the center of leaves causing browning, die-back and stress. Leafminer insects affect Borch , Boxwood and holly Trees.

2 applications for proper control. (Recommended)

Scale

A spray application used to control Scale, which are a variety of insects which pierce plant tissue and suck out fluids causing stress and weakening of plants. Scale generally affect: Cherry, Beech, Elm, Euonmyus, Hemlock, Holly, Honey Locust, Juniper, Magnolia, Maple, Oak, Pachysandra, Pine, Spruce and Taxus trees.

2 to 3 applications in late spring (Recommended) Insect “carcasses” will persist on the plants even after they have been killed. multiple applications are usually necessary to control all life stages of these insects
